Medifast Launches Three New Products and Medifast May be Tax-Deductible
PRNewswire
OWINGS MILLS, Md.

Bradley T. MacDonald, CEO and Chairman of the Board for Medifast, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: MDFT) announced that Medifast, the nation's #1 physician-recommended brand since 1983, released 3 new products. Medifast Peach Flavored Pro Iced Tea is just in time for summer with 10 grams of protein, 24 essential vitamins and minerals, 4 grams of dietary fiber, and only 75 calories per serving. New Medifast Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal is "heart healthy" with 6.7 grams of soy protein, 24 essential vitamins and minerals and 4 grams of dietary fiber per serving. Medifast's latest addition to its line of delicious soups is Chicken Noodle Soup, which boasts 5 grams of soy protein, 3 grams of dietary fiber and 24 essential vitamins and minerals. Contact Medifast on the Internet at medifastdiet.com or call 1.800.638.7867.

The cost of a Medifast program may now be tax deductible. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued a new policy that states that "you may include in medical expenses the cost of a weight loss program under a physician's direction to treat an existing disease (such as heart disease)." The policy appears in IRS Publication 502 and is exciting news for the thousands of Americans using Medifast under their physician's care to treat a condition and improve specific health problems. The American Obesity Association recognizes more than 30 medical conditions that are directly associated with obesity. Obesity itself is listed as a disease in the International Classification of Diseases and is recognized by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a disease. This IRS policy does not include tax deductions for over-the-counter retail meal replacement products.

Medifast meal replacement programs are available at several different levels depending on the dieter's health and weight-loss goals. The programs feature highly engineered meal replacement products, supervision by qualified medical practitioners and quick and healthy weight loss (3-5 pounds per week for women and 4-6 pounds per week for men). Because of the protein/carbohydrate content of the Medifast products, dieters are not hungry and have plenty of energy. Most Medifast products include soy protein and meet the FDA "healthy heart" claim that "25 grams of soy protein per day, along with a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease." Each serving must have 6.25 grams of soy protein per serving to make this claim. Medifast revenues are up over 40% year-to-date and the company has recorded 6 consecutive quarters of profit.
